Sample: 39 prompts, responses collected 2026-09-08 to 2026-09-08 (39 from ChatGPT, 39 from Perplexity, 24 from Google AI Overviews). Google AI Overviews has a lower response count because some prompts returned no AI Overview, and those are excluded from that engine's denominator. Excluded from citation counts: 22 prompts naming a specific business, per the TOP Score rules, and 71 prompts that stated no location, per the method. Percentages are the share of that engine's responses containing at least one citation of the domain. Ties: on ChatGPT, first place is a five-way tie at 6 citations between hydeparkdentalcare.com.au, macquariedental.com.au, paramountdentalsydney.com.au, thedentistry.com.au and townsvilledental.clinic. What the data says

Dentistry rewards publishing: the practices at the top are the ones with real patient guidance on implants, Invisalign and costs, not the biggest chains. On ChatGPT the top is now genuinely flat, a five-way tie at six citations each, which says no single practice has taken the category. The finding worth sitting with is on Perplexity. townsvilledental.clinic is a programmatic directory network, not a Townsville practice: one template, hundreds of generated profiles, Sydney-keyword pages included. On 8 September it was the most cited source in Perplexity's Sydney dentist answers at 46.2%, which makes it the clearest example yet of the AI-targeted content networks described in pattern four on the categories hub. Google AI Overviews, on a smaller base of 24 responses, spreads its citations thinly across individual practices with no clear leader. For most Sydney practices the story is simpler: they're absent, and the door is open.

How to read this page

• 1Citations are not mentions. This page measures which sources the engines link when they answer, not which businesses they name. Who gets named is the TOP Score, and it's measured separately.
